The Role of Grease in Road Bikes
Grease is a type of lubricant. Since a road bike is a kind of machine, grease is used in various parts.
There are three main ways grease is used in road bikes.
- Prevention of sticking and rusting
- Smooth rotation
- Increase the coefficient of friction
Bicycle Grease: Role and Use
It is surprisingly difficult to remember where to do bicycle greasing. In this article, we summarize the role of bicycle grease and how and where to use it.
Road bike parts that need to be greased to prevent sticking and rusting
A road bike is made up of various parts joined by screws to form a single bike. Each part deteriorates over time due to moisture from rain, sweat, etc., causing rust and sticking.
Therefore, in the case of a road bike, grease should be applied to all the screws to prevent sticking and rusting. However, there is no need to grease screws that are built into parts or that are frequently turned.
The following parts are commonly greased on road bikes
- Cranks
- Stem
- Handlebars
- Pedals
- Fork column
The purpose of all of these is to prevent sticking when it comes time to replace them. It is a good idea to remove and grease up all parts once a year if the road bike is stored outside, and once every 1-2 years if stored indoors.
Parts that can rotate smoothly by greasing up
Since a bicycle is a vehicle that rotates to move forward, the rotating parts are greased up from the time of installation. However, as the grease deteriorates over time, the rotation will not be smooth, and a “gurgling” feeling of resistance will appear.
When this happens, it is a good idea to replace the entire part, but it is also possible to bring back the original smooth rotation by disassembling and greasing up the rotating parts.
The parts of a road bike that can make the rotation smooth are the following parts that have bearings.
- Column head
- Wheel hub
- Pedal shaft
- Crankshaft
Most of these parts are basically sealed and greased, so the standard for greasing is “when you feel something wrong with the rotation. However, it seems that people who participate in races regularly grease up the shafts.
Although it is possible for an amateur to grease up any of these parts, if you are unsure, ask a professional store to do it for you.
How to choose grease
For ordinary bicycles, general-purpose grease sold in supermarkets is sufficient, but for road bike maintenance, it is best to use a specialized grease.
Shimano’s premium grease is the standard maintenance grease for road bikes.
Most road bike parts can be handled with Shimano’s premium grease, but carbon frames and wires require a different grease.
Annual greasing and maintenance can make road bikes last longer
Although it is a simple task, greasing up the parts once a year or so will prolong the life of your road bike.
This is not necessary for those who say, “I’ll buy a new bike as soon as it breaks down,” but many people want to ride their expensive road bikes for as long as possible.
As is the case with cars and motorcycles, regular maintenance is important if you want to ride it for a long time. Disassembling the bike for greasing can be a good opportunity to find defective parts, so please try greasing your car.
